Phil Jackson On Kobe Bryant: ‘Might Be His Last Year As A Laker’

Heading into the 2015-16 NBA season, much of the attention will be on Kobe Bryant. At age 37 and coming off three consecutive season-ending injuries, there are questions if he can not only remain healthy, but if this is truly the final season of his career.

Many former Lakers believe this will not be Kobe’s final season, but Phil Jackson had an interesting response during media day for the New York Knicks. While Jackson believes this will not be Kobe’s final season, he believes it could be his last with the Lakers according to Chris Herring of the Wall Street Journal:

Phil: "I think [Kobe] is going to be better than ppl think." He says he assumes there will offers on the table 4 him to continue his career.

Although Kobe has not made his decision regarding retirement, he has stated numerous times the importance of playing for one franchise and retiring as a Laker. Ultimately, playing 20 seasons with one franchise is a rare accomplishment in any sport.

Heading into the new season, Kobe is expected to play small forward while head coach Byron Scott limits his minutes. While the Lakers are in the early stages of the rebuilding process, Julius Randle hopes the young core can give Kobe a reason to continue playing past the season.
